The Percussion section is not only home to several types of drums and cymbals, but also several types of mallet instruments! Examples of these include the bells (or glockenspiel), xylophone, and tubular chimes. While we currently own some of these items, they were given to us secondhand and are now beginning to show their age. We are currently raising funds to purchase these instruments new so that they might last for several generations. Previous donations have allowed us to replace our old set of 2 timpani with a new set of 4 professional-grade Timpani. Below are our current desires for the percussion section in priority order.
The chimes aim to duplicate the sound of church bells, carillons, or a bell tower within an ensemble. They are played using hard plastic hammers to strike the top of the chimes.
Made up of wooden bars and struck by mallets, the xylophone offers a crisp and bright sound in the symphony.
This instrument is similar to the xylophone, but is made from aluminum or steel bars instead of wood. This creates a clear higher-pitched bell tone that has a slight sustain after being struck.
